NORHED II funding for global network on Peace and Conflict and Human Rights research

Norad has awarded funding through its NORHED II scheme for a six-year project to strengthen higher education institutions' ability to produce high-quality research and teaching. The project was initiated by The Norwegian Center for Human Rights (NCHR) and the Peace Research Institute Oslo (PRIO) in partnership with five leading institutions in Africa, Latin America and the Middle East.

The project shall develop a global network for enhancing academic capabilities in the fields of Peace and Conflict and Human Rights research and will run from 2021-2026 under the academic consortium of the Research School on Peace and Conflict. The project has been granted close to 20 million NOK and is entitled: "Partnership for Peace: Better Higher Education for Resilient Societies". It was submitted under sub-programme 4 on "Political and Economic Governance".

This will be a cooperation coordinated by NCHR together with PRIO, partnering with five leading institutions in three different parts of the world, including Africa (Makerere University, Uganda; African School of Economics, Benin; and Mekelle University, Ethiopia), Latin-America (Universidad de los Andes, Colombia) and the Middle East (Birzeit University, Palestine).

"This is a unique opportunity for PRIO to expand our higher education training together with highly competent global partners" says PRIO director, Henrik Urdal.

The new network will organize PhD courses, train junior faculty staff, develop relevant curricula and arrange academic exchanges. This cooperation will take place in the context of a research school focusing on peace and conflict and human rights issues. Norad received 199 applications to this call, of which 60 will be funded (see here).
