On 12-16 June the PRIO Research School on Peace and Conflict, in collaboration with the Kroc Institute for International Peace Studies, hosted doctoral candidates at the PhD-level course "International Mediation: Theory, Cases and Skills".
This course covered academic, policy and practitioner perspectives on international mediation. Through reviewing the scholarly literature, exploring relevant theories, and learning from senior mediation practitioners, the students engaged in an intense five-day program. The participants developed skills in conflict analysis, strategic planning for peacemaking, and mediating agreements between conflict parties. It offered participants the opportunity to engage in discussions with both scholars and Norwegian diplomats working directly with issues related to peace and conflict, and the course also included multiple mediation simulations.
The course was led by Researcher Laurie Nathan (Kroc Institute for International Peace Studies) and included contributions from Senior Researcher Jørgen Jensehaugen (PRIO), Deputy Director Torunn L. Tryggestad (PRIO), Research Professor Kristian Berg Harpviken (PRIO), Senior Researcher Kristoffer Lidén (PRIO), Research Professor Henrik Syse (PRIO), Senior Researcher Wenche Hauge as well as the seasoned Norwegian mediator Dag Nylander.
